I attempted a new type of applique recently. It is called a reverse applique. So, instead of using the top piece of fabric for your applique, you use the bottom piece. Fun idea.
I used it on some fleece no-sew blankets. A couple of my friends have had babies recently and I always like making blankets and personalizing them for a new baby. I was at Joann's looking for fleece fabric and I got so excited about making the blankets (and fleece was 50% off) that I decided to make Michele and Grant blankets too.
You can never have enough blankets...
These have got to be the easiest blankets ever. I bought 1 yard of each piece of fabric, cut about 1/2 inch off one side of each piece because it had the brand information and fabric name on it, then cut 4 inch slits--about 1/2" to 1" wide-- all the way around. Then just tied the two pieces together. One trick I learned however, is to cut a square out of each corner so you don't get a whole bunch of knots and lots of fabric bunched at the corners.
The reverse applique is the fastest applique I have ever done. Literally about 2 minutes to stitch out, then cut out the inside of the letter. Done.
